“We All Live in the Coal Fields”
West Virginians Step Up Protests as EPA OKs New Mountaintop Removal
At least thirty people were arrested in West Virginia Saturday as protesters marked a new phase of Operation Appalachian Spring, a campaign to end mountaintop removal mining. The protests came just a week after the Obama administration gave the green light for forty-two more mountaintop removal permits in a major victory for the coal industry. (Mountaintop removal has destroyed 450 mountains in West Virgina, Virginia and Kentucky.)
- details and interview at Democracy Now
An excerpt from the interview with author and activist Jeff Biggers on May 29:
AMY GOODMAN: What about media coverage, Jeff Biggers, of Appalachia?
JEFF BIGGERS: Media coverage. You know, this is something that I’m just not quite sure what’s going on. You know, here you have one of the most egregious environmental and human rights violations right before our very eyes.
You have little communities in West Virginia, a little town outside called Prenter, where 97 percent of the people have some sort of gallbladder disease. You have Americans who cannot drink their water. You have people who are living under daily explosions and silica dust coming into their gardens and their farms. People are having to be relocated and removed. And yet the mainstream media is not handling it. They’re just sort of acting as if this is something that can wait, that something—that it’s not really an urgent issue.

EVENT: HOMEBASE AT SANTOS
Scenes from HomeBase at Santos Party House from last week. A night of left-field soul and the new cool rap featuring Fresh Daily, Outasight, Brittany Bosco, Eyeris and Tiara Wiles. MRE members GetLive and Alice Wonderland continuing to build the HomeBase movement as it only gets stronger from month to month. What started as a conversation between the three of us in January '08 has now become one of the key platforms for exposing new music in the city.Photography courtesy of Richard Louissaint

DESIGN: FASHION, POP, VINYL AND JAZZ
Some images that have been catching my attention around London. Top to bottom:
BIG MAN MAGAZINE
New bi-annual men's fashion magazine created by photographer Toni Torres.
DAZED&CONFUSED
Dazed has been pushing some creative covers and slowly but surely getting back to exposing the cutting-edge pop they were known for in the '90s.
WATCH TV "WILD SAFARI" 12" SINGLE
Sometimes the best design is no design at all. Inside its clear plastic sleeve with just the price and a small write-up on a white sticker - this 12" single is killing on the shelves of Rough Trade.
ORNETTE COLEMAN'S MELTDOWN
Yoko Ono, The Roots, Mike Patton, James Blood Ulmer, Charlie Haden and other heavyweights are coming to town for part of this festival curated by Coleman.

SEEMS LIKE HOME TO ME
Can't forget that the Express is about all types of good music. The BBC's Colin Murray played this tonight on his show. It made me think how much I'd like to be back home right now - heading out of New York, going up to the Hudson Valley with the windows down. Check Collin Murray's Radio 1 show on the regular, he's always championing great songs.

MEMORIAL DAY
Before the Iraq War is over the war in Afghanistan and the Central Asia region is just beginning, do Americans care?
From an article on CQ Politics covering Senator John Kerry's hearings in April with Afghanistan vets speaking before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Exactly 38 years after he testified against the Vietnam War.
An excerpt from "Echoes Of Vietnam...", April 23 2009:
Boston University professor and a retired Army Col. Andrew Bacevich observed that the starkest difference between the hearing Thursday and the one in 1971 is public disengagement.
“When the young John Kerry spoke, many of his contemporaries had angrily turned against their generation’s war. Today, most of the contemporaries of those fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan have simply tuned out the Long War,” Bacevich said. “The predominant mood of the country is not one of anger or anxiety, but of dull acceptance.”
Where is the justice for the Americans that were sent to a war based on lies? Why aren't we as a country asking for someone to be held accountable for the dead and wounded American troops and Iraqi people?

A GREAT NIGHT IN HARLEM
The MRE's Carlos Ramos ran the sound for his client the Jazz Foundation during their "Great Night" concert in Harlem on May 14th. In between supervising the set up of PA systems and running the boards for two outdoor stages Los found time to dip inside the Apollo Theater to rub the Tree Of Hope and get a photo in front of their Wall Of Fame. Carlos on being inside the world famous Apollo: "The wall with all the signatures was really inspiring. The famous ones and names you don't know are on there. It shows the struggle. Each one of them tried in their own way."
