EVENT: HELIO SEQUENCE / MAY 28 / NYC

Helio Sequence killed us last year with Keep Your Eyes Ahead. We featured "The Captive Mind" in one of our sessions for Brooklyn Radio but almost every cut on the album could have been a single. Fleet Foxes was the big story for the label Sub Pop but the Helio guys deserved a better push and more exposure. Catch them next month in BK.

LONGWAVE ON THE ROAD

MRE favorites Longwave recap a long winter on the road with this clip. "Sirens" and "No Direction" both from their latest album Secrets Are Sinister were featured in our sessions for Brooklyn Radio. Tommy Rockers and I tore it up with a core group of fans at the Bowery show last December. The band brought the lights, the sound and the vibes like it was a night at the Garden. Dues paid off as their friends Bloc Party had them open to thousands at Terminal 5. Keep on rocking Longwave.

A record skip, a blown verse and De La rides the energy through it all over the beast of a groove that is "Say No Go".

MRETV61

If Andy Warhol can get a GIANT sized book about his life and work then Fab 5 Freddy should get a book where the cover is a real size photo of him from 1982 and you'd need two people to carry it out of St. Marks Bookshop.

STONE LOVE 1989

Stone Love sound system with Rory on the set inside the ballroom. Fly styles and easy sounds. Catch Stone Love whenever they come to town. Rory will put you under the Stone Love hypnotic spell just like this. I saw him at SOB's in the mid 90's and it was the same vibe. Hours of magnificent music and echo chamber presentation.

MRETV59_FLYTE TIME CLASSICS

Washington DC, 1986, radio station DJ100 is broadcasting a set of "five strong songs in a row", the antenna on the boom box is angled just right to make sure the signal stays locked in, the pause button is off and a 60 minute Maxell is now recording Starpoint, Whistle, Five Star and The Jets. And then Alexander O'Neal's "What's Missing" comes on and time stops.

That's what the songs written and produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis do at their best. A Flyte Time record can stop the clocks and when it's over you feel like you're waking from a dream. The extended version of "Saturday Love" by Alexander O'Neal and Cherelle is eight minutes and forty-five seconds of the earth's rotation on pause.

They are one of the great songwriting duos of all-time. There is Gamble and Huff, Elton John and Bernie Taupin, The Glimmer Twins, Lennon/McCartney and if you know what time it is - there is Jam and Lewis.
